ABOUT ROB WYTHE
I started my career as a Photojournalist after receiving my Bachelor of Journalism Degree from the University of Texas at Austin and worked at a highly regarded social community newspaper for 4 years. It was an exciting adventure to not know what was to come and to see my images published daily. However, a newspaper is only temporary, and I wanted to create something more permanent.
After apprenticing with photographers that worked in different forms of photography, I knew that portraiture was my real passion.
I had the honor to work with Gittings, a nationally renowned and respected portrait studio formed in 1928, and through years of mentoring with photographers who have mastered the art of portraiture I advanced my position to become the Dallas Chief Photographer. I worked with Gittings for 17 years but after starting a family my heart was in creating a business on a more focused and personal level.
My wife and I discovered a dilapidated, vacant home and got the crazy idea to bring it back to life and begin our own footprint in Historic Downtown McKinney. I appreciate and respect the older hometown feel of McKinney and share in its strong foundation and belief in family and community. McKinney is our home.
My focus as a photographer is to create those treasured images that will make you smile and remind you of the love and beauty that your family possesses. Your family’s special portraits are as important as the art you have adorning your walls.
I love to photograph inside your home because when we look back at portraits, it gives us a sense of where we came from. It tells your life story at that very special time. I specialize in lighting families and interiors in any situation but can also use studio lighting to balance and create beautiful images in the studio as well as outside.
A portrait session should be enjoyed and a memorable experience. It is my goal to bring that experience to each and every person who honors me with the opportunity to photograph their special portrait.
OUR PURPOSE
Wythe Portrait Studio was created by Sally and Rob Wythe to bring fine art portraiture to the growing families of North Texas. After starting a family and falling in love with an 1882 home in need of restoration, we decided that we wanted to bring our family to McKinney, Texas. The small town feel with a strong heritage reminded Rob of the town he often visited in his childhood where his grandparents and parents grew up. As we went through old portraits of family from generations ago, we realized that the importance of prints is being lost and is in danger of being totally forgotten. Portraits deserve to be displayed. We hope to bring a personal touch to our clients that has been overlooked among other studios that do not take the time to get the know the family and what is meaningful to them.
As for my photography, everything is thought about and planned in advance to the session. I have worked with studio lighting for 17 years and that experience has taught me how important the correct lighting is in creating a beautiful portrait. I also have an understanding of natural light, how it affects a photograph and how to work around it to highlight the beauty in a portrait. Posing is essential. I will walk you through every step to create the most flattering portrait of your family.
We feel it is our responsibility to educate and remind families of the importance of a fine art portrait that will be displayed in your home. We know the ease of digital images, but there is a quality in our images and the printing process that cannot be replicated in digital files.
It is time to take down the impersonal art brought in to fill a space on your wall and replace it with beautifully crafted portraits of those you love.
PORTRAIT PROCESS
- Design Consultation
-
This part of the portrait process is more important than most people realize. During this appointment we will meet in person at your home or my gallery to discuss what you want in a Family Portrait. This includes clothing, family dynamics, overall lighting, location, timing and most importantly, where you are thinking of displaying the portrait. All of those things will help keep the session fun, succinct, and successful. I believe strongly that in order to create a meaningful portrait, we need to slow down and make this more of an experience and not just a photo shoot. I will not move forward with a portrait session until this is accomplished. As I get to know you and your family, future designs can be abbreviated and possibly done on the phone if I am familiar with your location selections.
- The Portrait Session
-
I usually arrive 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to the session to set up lighting and rearrange the scene if needed. Once ready and everyone is present, I will be sure to place you in an organized fashion and give direction on posing. I aspire to get a natural expression from all those present and to successfully capture various poses in a timely manner so the whole experience is enjoyed and not tiresome for those involved.
- The Viewing
-
After the images are edited and a slideshow is prepared, you will be invited to my gallery in the Historic McKinney Neighborhood to view the images on a large screen, in a relaxed setting, away from distractions. We will work together to choose the images you want to purchase and discuss any specific requests you may have. If you are interested in framing, I have a select group of custom frames from which you may choose. From there I send the images to my digital artist and printer in order for them to create portraits which will make you proud.
